Throughout this session, artists will study examples from ancient cultures while building their understanding of the elements of art, composition, art history, and artistic technique. Each project is designed to go beyond the finished piece. We’ll draw, paint, explore texture, experiment with printmaking, and develop artwork inspired by some of the most recognizable imagery of the ancient world.

PROJECT 1: STONEHENGE: LINE, FORM & TEXTURE
How can an artist make a flat drawing feel solid and dimensional?
Students will begin with one of the ancient world’s most mysterious landmarks: Stonehenge. After learning about the monument and considering how its massive stones were arranged, artists will create their own interpretation using line, shape, form, perspective, and texture.
Students will practice transforming simple geometric shapes into convincing three-dimensional forms through careful line work and spatial relationships. Watercolor will add atmosphere to the landscape, while experimental salt techniques will introduce organic texture and unexpected visual effects.
Art Focus: Line • Shape • Form • Texture • Space
Techniques: Observational drawing • Creating 3D form • Watercolor • Salt texture
Art History Connection: Prehistoric art and architecture • Stonehenge
PROJECT 2: ANCIENT EGYPT: SYMBOLIC ANIMAL PRINTMAKING
Ancient Egyptian artists filled their world with images rich in meaning. Animals were especially important, appearing in paintings, carvings, hieroglyphs, and objects throughout Egyptian art.
Students will investigate the distinctive visual style of ancient Egyptian artwork, paying special attention to its bold outlines, simplified shapes, patterns, and symbolism. Artists may work from an Egyptian-inspired cat, the Bennu bird, or research another animal connected to ancient Egyptian culture.
They will then translate their drawing into a printing plate, discovering how an image must be planned differently when it is created for printmaking. Students will carve their designs into scratch foam, apply printing ink, and pull their own prints while experimenting with pressure, contrast, and repeated imagery.
Art Focus: Line • Shape • Pattern • Contrast • Positive & Negative Space
Techniques: Drawing for print • Relief-style printmaking • Inking • Hand printing
Art History Connection: Ancient Egyptian art • Animal symbolism • Visual storytelling
About this class:
Ready to take your art to the next level?
Each month, we explore a new creative theme—but the theme is only the starting point. Artists will use it as inspiration to explore advanced techniques, artistic concepts, creative problem-solving, and personal expression.
This class is designed for teens who want more than simply following a project. Artists will learn to think like artists, make intentional creative choices, and develop artwork that reflects their own ideas and style.
Throughout the year, artists will dive deeper into the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, explore a variety of mediums and techniques, study artistic styles and inspiration, and learn how to develop an idea from the first sketch to a finished piece.
In Teen Artist Studio, artists will:
🎨 Develop stronger drawing, painting, and mixed-media skills
🖌️ Explore advanced Elements of Art & Principles of Design
💡 Learn how to develop and communicate their own ideas
✨ Experiment with different materials, techniques, and artistic styles
🔍 Study artists and creative inspiration connected to each month's theme
📐 Explore composition, proportion, value, color theory, texture, and more
🧠 Practice creative problem-solving and making intentional artistic choices
🌈 Build confidence in developing their own artistic voice
Projects will be open-ended enough to allow for individuality, while still providing strong instruction and artistic direction.
This is a class for teens who are ready to slow down, challenge themselves, take creative risks, and grow as artists. Every month brings a new theme.
This is where creativity becomes craftsmanship, ideas become artwork, and young artists begin to discover their own artistic voice.
